I Did It!

What exactly is it that I did?  I finished, yes, finished, a Flash Fiction piece.  A completed story in under 1000 words.  For some folks that’s daily fare.  For me, that is an unbelieveable accomplishment.  Because, although I can string together over 70,000 words to tell a tale, it’s always been a huge struggle for me to write shorts.  The mere thought of trying to develop a story in under 5000 words, let alone 1000, can send me into a cold sweat with fits of muttering under my breath and pacing.

So I’m quite pleased with myself at the moment.

It’s no literary masterpiece, to be sure.  But I almost . . . like it.  I have to tweak the ending yet.  Still not completely satisfied with that.  Probably a few more tweaks beyond that.  Unfortunately, for all of you now on the edge of your seats, anxious to read it, I won’t be able to share it here for a while.  I wrote it for the Flash Fiction contest on Devin O’Branagan’s forum.  I’ll keep you posted on how it does and put it on the Freebies page once the contest is over.

Speaking of the Freebies page.  *Ahem!*  For those of you who haven’t noticed and are curious as to my writing style, I have posted an excerpt.  It is one scene out of several disjointed scenes I have written that may, or may not, develop into a full-fledged book one day.  Enjoy!

  1. Grats on your first flash piece, fellow writer! Now that you’ve checked that off your bucket list, got any plans to follow up with some twitterfic?

    • Thanks, James. Nice blog, BTW. Very interesting. Not sure what “twitterfic” is — I must be behind the times.

    • Ha, ha! Let’s see if I survive this one! LOL It was a nice diversion from the query letter that’s making me crazy and the WIP I’m stuck on. Need to get back to both of those.

  4. I’m impressed Kathi! I have the same problem with shorts, so while I tried and did my best, this month was a bit of a no-go. I’ve seen reworked it and will probably post on the Storyboard page. Cannot wait to read yours though!

    • Some people make shorts seem so easy! I think I want to delve too much into the whys and wherefores to sum it all up in such a limited space.
