In The Midst of Chaos

Which is precisely how I feel at the moment. But, it being WIPpet Wednesday

SeanBeanWIPpet

I must dash in quick like the proverbial bunny, give you something from a current WIP that relates to the date, and dash out. “No time to say hello, good-bye. I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”

ROW80, I promise to catch up on details/goals next Wednesday.

There and Draft Again is hosting a giveaway in honor of surpassing 100 followers. Go see what it’s all about.

And now, because I feel as though I’m in chaos, a little of the same fromΒ Emergence.Β 22 lines from what is currently Chapter 22:

“Ciara?” He approached her cautiously, as though she were a wounded lion.

She lifted her face. Her eyes stopped him. They were darker than he’d ever seen them; hard, cold, and dancing with flickers of red. Anger flashed in them and Bolin braced himself, but it faded instantly.

“Oh, it’s you,” she said, her voice flat. “I thought they came back.”

She looked down at Berk, and brushed the damp hair off his forehead. His eyes were closed, his chest rising and falling with a slight hitch. Blood stained the left side of his tunic. Bolin edged closer and though Ciara didn’t look up the shadow of power around her darkened.

“I wouldn’t come any closer if I were you. He’s very angry.”

Bolin wet his lips. “You’re safe now, Ciara. You and Berk both. Tell him he can go.”

She shook her head, her hair fell thickly around her shoulders in a tangled, matted mess. “I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.” He crouched down, an arm’s length from her, ducking his head to try and catch her eye.

And now I must away. Go spread the WIPpeteer love!

  1. Tense! Makes me wonder what led up to this.

“And now I must away” makes you sound like a superhero who flies around dropping tiny bits of stories everywhere and then taking off again. πŸ˜€

    • A Super Hero! Yes, but I won’t wear tights or a big initial on my chest. I’ll take the cape though, as long as it’s not bright. Ta-da-da!!!!!

      • Just watch out for airplane engines… O.o

        May 22, 2013 at 3:40 pm

      • Ugh. That would hurt.

      • *tasteless joke redacted*

      • Chicken.

        I love tasteless jokes.

I love chicken, too. *smiles sweetly*

      • All I was going to say was that you could always change your name to “Confetti Girl”if the cape/airplane thing didn’t work out.

        Eew…

      • This here is a perfectly good reason why I love WIPpet Wednesday!

      • It’s like a weekly party. πŸ™‚

  2. Ooh this is good. Loads of tension and I love the way Bolin is keeping his distance and being so wary of how Ciara will react. I’m with Kate – wondering what has happened before this scene.

I now have that song going round my head, ‘I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date…’ Lol!

    May 22, 2013 at 8:56 am

    • Well, you and Kate don’t get to find out what led up to this scene because it would be too big of a spoiler. You’ll just have to wait until it’s finished.

My maniacal plan is working. Infiltrate brain pans with the White Rabbit song from Alice in Wonderland. Check. World domination . . . working on it.

      May 22, 2013 at 3:40 pm

  3. Love the tension and the looks between them. And yeah, I’ve got that same “I’m late” refrain going through my head.

  4. This is a fantastic excerpt Kathi. I really felt the tension in the scene. Lots of unanswered questions. I hope I’ll find out what happens next sometime soon. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you. But, unfortunately, until it is done, you will just have to live with not knowing. πŸ˜‰

  5. BTW forgot to say I’m planning to start reading FOHK today.

    May 22, 2013 at 10:30 am

    • Hurray! Let me know what you think.

  6. Does Berk have Anakos, too?

    May 22, 2013 at 11:13 am

    • Nope. Interesting tid-bit about Berk — he was supposed to be a walk-on character. Next thing I knew he got an agent and demanded his own POV. I warned him what happens to characters that get their own POV. He didn’t seem to care. Shame, too, cause he’s awfully cute. πŸ˜‰

      May 22, 2013 at 3:46 pm

      • Darn ambitious characters. They always mess up our *cough* perfect plot outlines.

        May 22, 2013 at 4:01 pm

      • Especially since now I have to figure out a reason for him to be there, strutting around with his own POV for all the world to see. It’s rather confounding the ending.

        May 22, 2013 at 4:03 pm

  7. Brooke

I love the tidbit you shared, sounds like a great piece out of a fascinating tale. Looking forward to hearing more about it!

  9. Ahhhhhhh! I wants to know more! I second everyone else: the tension in this snippet is great. I’m definitely intrigued.

    May 22, 2013 at 1:26 pm

    • Ahhhhhh, you don’t get to learn more! Not yet, anyway. Mwahahahahaha. *ahem* I mean, I wouldn’t want to give away any spoilers.

      May 22, 2013 at 3:47 pm

  10. You may be busy, but you chose a wonderfully taunting excerpt today, Kathi. Why does Ciara feel she cannot….

    May 22, 2013 at 2:46 pm

    • Why, thank you, Eden. And to answer the question of why she cannot . . . read the first book. πŸ˜‰ Just kidding!! Ciara has a very difficult time controlling her power. It tends to have a mind of its own, especially when she gets worked up about something.

      May 22, 2013 at 3:48 pm

      • Well, I did figure I would have to read the book to really find out… But it was the biggest question that came to mind after that piece. I wanted to know why she couldn’t/wouldn’t.

        May 22, 2013 at 4:06 pm

  11. Great stuff, Kathi! I love the tension in this piece.

    May 22, 2013 at 8:11 pm

    • Thanks, Kate! πŸ™‚

  12. Hope you had fun chasing the white bunny. And I have no idea what’s going on in your WIP, but I’m interested to know who Berk is, and I have to admit that Bolin seems uncharacteristically out of his element. Good stuff!

    May 22, 2013 at 10:16 pm

    • Wascally wabbit is still wunning. Hmm. . . I believe I’ve just mixed my rabbits. πŸ˜‰

Berk was a huge surprise to me. And Bolin, well, in Book One I made it tough on him physically. In Book Two I make it tough on him emotionally. Poor guy.

  14. Love it – as always. Can’t wait for Emergence to… *coughs* emerge… (Yes am also having ridiculously busy week – so can totally relate). Have fun! See you next week! *disappears back down the rabbit hole*

    • Let me know if you find that darn rabbit. I’m heading out of town for 5 days so next week is going to be another mad scramble.
