Interview with WIPpeteer ReGi McClain

Today I start the first of many WIPpeteer interviews. Time to get to know this crazy crew just a bit better, I say. We start with the adorable ReGi McClain — if memory serves, one of the original WIPpeteers. If memory doesn’t serve, well then, so be it.

The irrepressible ReGi.

The irrepressible ReGi.

Let’s give a warm round of applause to ReGi McClain, here all the way from . . . *consults notes* . . . Alaska? Whose handwriting is this? How am I expected to . . . oh, um, yes, continuing on . . .

kls: Welcome to my humble abode on the web, ReGi. Please, take a seat. No! Not there. That’s . . . um . . . *lowers voice and peers around the room* that’s where the flying monkeys sit. It’s best not to provoke them. Even when they’re not here.

RGMC:  Oh, I wouldn’t dare provoke a flying monkey. Besides, I hear monkeys aren’t too good at controlling certain bodily functions.

kls: Oh, man! Could I tell you the stories about that! Maybe later. How about using this pile of books. Yes, actual books. Just pop this pillow on top and try not to wiggle around too much. I’d hate for you to tip over.

RGMC: I guess it’s a good thing I’ve been practicing my balance poses in yoga this week.

kls: There, all settled. Something to drink, perhaps?

RGMC: Do you happen to have any vegan hot chocolate? No?  Oh well. No thank you, then.

kls: Oooookay, on with the interview. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself. Who are you?

RGMC: I’m an evil-fighting, monster-taming, universe-traversing, omniscient force of nature. If you mean my alter ego, she’s just a boring, old, Jesus-freak wifey and homeschooling mom of four that lives in Alaska. Seriously, her idea of excitement is staring at the ceiling in the silent room at the library. Although, her kids are pretty awesome. Two of them are on the autistic spectrum and one of them is ADHD, so they keep her moving.

kls: Let’s talk WIPpeteers for a moment. What drew you to the WIPpeteers?

RGMC: The consistency. When you started the group, I was trying to be more consistent about blogging, but writing short stories and articles took time away from my real WIP’s . WIPpets offered me a way to make sure I had a weekly post that would help advance my WIP’s rather than take time away from them.

kls: Glad you found it of such use. 🙂 What WIP(s) have you been sharing with our readers?

RGMC: The great majority of my WIPpets are from Fairy Blood or The Queen of Bears.

kls: What’s your favorite part of WIPpet Wednesday?

RGMC: I love the community! The support and camaraderie among the WIPpeteers is amazing. Although I only know one other WIPeteer personally, I feel like I’ve made friends.

kls: We are an incredible bunch, I must say. Outside of WW, what project(s) are you currently working on?

RGMC:  NaNoWriMo at the moment. I hope to finish well. The start has been rocky. Other than that, my alter ego won’t let me do much at a time. Among her kids that need speech or occupational therapy, we have 7 or more appointment trips to make every week. She tries not to complain too much (except to Alana, with whom she has a mutual unlimited whining agreement), but it does get to be a bit much at times. I have some short stories heading for Kindle soonishly, but they are on the back-burner until after November.

kls: Time for some horn-blowing. Tell our readers what you have out there, where to find it, what’s coming next, and where to connect with you.

RGMC: Fairy Blood is scheduled to be released in November, 2014. Right now, you can follow The Queen of Bears and find excerpts of Fairy Blood over on my blog, at http://regimcclain.wordpress.com. I post one or two super short stories there per month as well. You can also find me on

I have a newsletter, too, but it won’t be very active until I’m ready to push Fairy Blood.

kls: Very cool. You are everywhere! Okay, get ready, here comes the lightning round!

Coffee or tea? Both.

Rock or country? Rock, but I married into Country.

City, country, or seaside? SEASIDE!!!

Favorite color? Blue.

Favorite pastime besides penning fantastic tales? Reading. Unless you count chilling with friends while my alter ego’s kids play happily nearby without vying for their mom’s attention.

kls: I think that’s all I have. Thanks so much for stopping by and for joining in the craziness that is WIPpet Wednesdays. Anything else you’d like to share? Any final thoughts?

RGMC: I would like to warn anyone thinking of joining the WIPpeteers about your mind-control powers and… um… Why are you looking at me that way? No! Wait! Don’t call the flying monkeys! I meant, I’d like to tell them how very lovely you are, Mistress, and how wonderful it is to be one of your minions, er, blog friends. I mean blog friends.  Please call the monkeys off, Mistress. I won’t do it again (today).

kls: Of course you won’t, my pretty. Um. . .  Was the camera still running? Darn it, who’s supposed to be editing this stuff?

  1. Great interview! I look forward to ReGi’s excerpts every week, and it’s nice to get to know her better.

Man, I’m scared to come over there if there are flying monkeys. Those things freak me out. Better pack a dragon in my bag for when I visit.

    November 22, 2013 at 12:07 pm

    • I’ll cage the flying monkeys when you stop over. But, please, do bring a dragon! I love dragons. Ow! Hey, which of you monkeys threw that?!!?

      November 22, 2013 at 12:39 pm

      • Do I want to know what they threw?

        November 22, 2013 at 12:40 pm

      • I don’t even want to know what this is. Eeewwwwww.

        November 22, 2013 at 12:45 pm

      • (And I’ll see if I can bring a dragonling, but they’re getting mighty unruly these days)

  3. I don’t think there’s a smiley quite big enough to express my woohoo! at this moment. Or the size of my head. … You’re not still mad about that little slip of the tongue, are you?

    November 22, 2013 at 2:39 pm

    • What?!!? You slipped on a tongue? I swear I picked them all u . . . uh . . . ha, ha, slip *of* the tongue. No. Not mad. Perhaps a bit crazy but certainly not mad.
      Mwahahahahahahahaha

      November 22, 2013 at 4:58 pm

      • Oh dear. Are you cutting out tongues again, Kathils? *deep, long-suffering sigh* You know what this means, don’t you? It means I’m going to have to call everyone for another intervention. *shakes head* When will you ever learn?

        November 22, 2013 at 7:06 pm

  4. Regi, I thought we had agreed to keep out mutual whine agreement a secret. Who knows how many others are going to want to get in on it now? Kathi, may I borrow a flying monkey or two?

    November 22, 2013 at 4:45 pm

    • Well, they’re not very predictable but, sure, why not. Take Gustav over there on the end, the one with the two tassels on his hat. Yeah, that’s him. Just make sure not to feed him any bananas. I know they love them but, well, they just don’t agree with him.

      November 22, 2013 at 5:00 pm

      • Don’t do it, Kathi! Alana’s boys are Jedi Knights. They’ll easily sway your monkeys. It may start with one, but before you know it, they’ll all be under her control!

        November 22, 2013 at 7:40 pm

      • Way to ruin all my surprises Regi. What, half Kathi’s kingdom wasn’t enough for you?

        November 22, 2013 at 10:52 pm

      • Hmmm . . . . *drums fingers on table* so. Conspiracy, huh? And Ninja children. This could get interesting.

  5. Great interview!

    November 22, 2013 at 8:54 pm

    • Thanks, Xina. 🙂

  6. FANTASTIC interview! So much fun! Even Joe enjoyed it. He’s adjusting quite well, Kathi. I think being away from the brood is helping temper the …. I’m getting the look, so I’ll stop there. He’s still evil! ReGi – so awesome to get to know you better!!

    November 22, 2013 at 9:11 pm

    • 🙂 Thanks.

      November 22, 2013 at 9:30 pm

    • Are Joe and the cat still plotting?

      November 24, 2013 at 8:46 am

      • I suspect so. Cat’s been awfully cuddly this past week. I might not see the holidays this year.

        November 24, 2013 at 8:50 am

  7. Yaaaay, first interview kickoff! What fun! I lived in Anchorage and Juneau between the ages of 7-almost 11. haha, that just about rhymed, how fun. It was wonderful getting to know you a bit Regi! *ahem* Good to know about the flying monkeys….

    November 22, 2013 at 10:35 pm

    • Thank you, Sarah. 🙂 … *glances around surreptitiously, leans in to whisper* Just so you know, they’re all over the place. Kathils uses them to keep an eye on us, so none of us gets out of hand.

      November 23, 2013 at 1:55 pm

    • ReGi’s exaggerating, of course. The flying monkeys aren’t everywhere. For instance, I try not to ever, not under any circumstances, allow them in the kitchen. It took me a week to clean up the mess the last time.

      November 24, 2013 at 8:42 am

      • *laughs heartily* sound advice, Kathy, sound advice! No flying monkees in the kitchen! I shouldn’t like my pea soup to have any surprises in it, like pee soup or something… *leans in toward Regi, whispering* hear that? No monkeys in the kitchen… it’s a safe zone! I should find some ruby slippers… think that’ll help?

        November 24, 2013 at 10:33 am

      • I have some ruby slippers for you. *smiles sweetly and holds out shoe box*

  10. ReGi, alter egos, WIPs and flying monkeys – what’s not to love! Fabulous idea! 🙂

    November 25, 2013 at 4:29 am

  11. “I’m an evil-fighting, monster-taming, universe-traversing, omniscient force of nature”–that just made me giggle. What a great interview!!!

    November 25, 2013 at 10:20 am

  12. Jae

Great interview! Looking forward to seeing all of them! 🙂

    November 27, 2013 at 1:06 pm

    • Me, too. I love getting the responses and reading through them. WIPpeteers rock.

      November 27, 2013 at 2:40 pm

  13. I’m not sure who’s the busier of the two here… ReGi or her alter-ego. I mean, being a force of nature has to be a very stressful occupation. And homeschooling children with ASD can be intense (though often easier than public school)…

    *tips hat* Bravo!
