Soul Resurrected Blurb and Excerpt

Soul Resurrected ~ Sons of Wrath #2 As Wrath’s fiercest son, Logan carries the scars of fifty years spent in the most dreaded prison of the underworld, for a sin he’d kill to keep secret. Enduring decades of gruesome torture has left Logan feared by and detached from others, until a female Alexi’s blood resurrects his soul from death and, with it, the pleasures he’s been denied for so long.

Plagued by shame of her own, Calla is drawn to the ruthless demon, Logan, whose insatiable craving for her touch rouses buried passions and, for once, leaves her feeling desired.

A dark and dangerous evil has been reawakened, however, and when Calla is drawn too close to its breeding grounds, Logan vows to summon the violence of Wrath in order to keep her safe. First, though, Calla must save him from a past riddled with deceit and corruption … but only if she can accept the chilling consequences of unearthing his vilest skeleton.

CHAPTER 1

Some lives just weren’t worth the trouble of saving …

The dark room swallowed Logan, as he lay sprawled on his bed—just as he’d been left after ditching his date with death. A stomach-turning sensation of thickened skin and tingles swathed his body, closing in on him, phantom sensations crawling over his flesh that kept him awake. Every five minutes or so, he willed an arm or a leg to move. No go.
Shadows danced across the wall on the occasions that one of the Catatones guarding the mansion passed through the floodlight below his window. He focused on them only because his neck had been propped in that direction and he had no choice. Good thing, though. She had been assigned to watch over him and slept somewhere beyond his periphery, the reminder heating his blood every time her sleepy moan drifted across the room.
The fury could’ve split him right down the middle.
Her blood ran through him—pumping in his veins, feeding his heart, keeping him alive.
Calla’s.
The woman who’d gotten him stabbed with Demortis, the only element capable of taking down a demon, now swam through his body as the only element capable of saving him. Her blood. Pure. Probably the closest he’d ever come to being righteous.
The irony was enough to leave him scratching his own eyeballs out of his head—that is, if he could reach the damn things. Like a bitch slap from the gods, who probably sat around drinking beers over the shit, poking fun at him.
The side effect of returning from the dead?
Feeling like the fucking dead.
Logan tightened his lip, wishing he could kick his own ass for being so stupid. Not like he’d had to save her or anything. Hell, being a demon meant being the exception to human rules.
And being a son of Wrath meant never having to play by any species’ rules.
Yet for some reason, one lodged so deep inside his brain he couldn’t even begin to explain, he’d felt the need to intervene. Not so much for her sake, but because the little prick trying to rape her had taken a jab at the psychopath buried in Logan’s bones. Taunted him.
Then finally tripped his kill-switch.
Yeah, that’s what Logan told himself, anyway, because no other excuse could possibly justify why he couldn’t stir a single muscle in his body for anything having to do with her—Calla. The girl they’d picked up at some underground party, so high on Shine she’d have probably let every one of the brothers have a go at her if they’d been the ravaging bastardly types.
Lucky for her they weren’t.
“Should’ve walked away,” he muttered, his voice the only part of his body he could control.
A zing of pain shot through Logan’s feet, flexing them into an unnatural, paralyzed position. “Ah, shit!” Hadn’t his feet been numb just seconds ago?
Not even forcing his muscles to relax shook the sting away, one like a strike to the level of his bones, as if they shattered with impact.
He held his breath and clenched his teeth while the pain crept up his leg. “Motherfucker!” He spoke past gritted teeth, keeping his voice low to keep from rousing his babysitter, but damn, his back arched like one of those tetanus-infected bastards, his eyes squinting so hard they could’ve popped backward into his brain.
Black smoke curled behind his lids, and a deep laughter mocked him as the agony reached his spine. Trembling in the bed, Logan clamped his mouth shut and allowed the convulsions to run through him.
In silence.
He’d known pain—gut-turning, put-me-out-of-my-fucking-misery pain. Nothing compared to what wracked him at that moment, as if nightmares could invade the body and inflict injury. The burn, like molten lava oozing in his veins, seeped into his every cell, searing him from the inside. Sweat trickled down his temple at the same time as a chill burst deep inside his bones and swept through his limbs, leaving behind a wake of nausea.
That black smoke carried the familiar sensation he’d felt once or twice in his life—from the quick witted son of a bitch that brought the toughest demon males to their knees: absolute death. Stygius. The place in the underworld from where no soul ever returned.
With shallow panting breaths, he allowed the blackness worming its way into his mind to take over as something dark and wicked laid claim.
All Logan could do was let it take him.

🙂

I’ve been looking forward to this day for quite a while. Not only do I have Keri Lake here for an interview, but we get to oggle that gorgeous cover hunk again, and tell you about all the great stuff you can win in the Soul Resurrected Scavenger Hunt.

First, the interview, as Keri has been waiting for some time now while I just stand here and stare longingly at my monitor. *sigh* Ouch! Um . . . thanks for the elbow in the ribs, Keri. *clears throat. So, onto the interview then.

kls: I’m going to toss out the easy one first. Mwahahahaha. Tell us, who is your favorite son of Wrath?

KL: Oh man!  That’s like asking a mom to pick her favorite!  I love them all for different reasons.  But I think I hold the most respect for Gavin.  As the eldest sibling, I can relate to him and can empathize with his sense of responsibility over those he loves.  He’s fiercely loyal and would do anything for his brothers, as was the case with his brother Logan when he offered to be his Brozszius in Obsidius.

kls: Yes, Gavin is the epitome of an older brother. I hope the other boys appreciate him. Speaking of the other brothers, where did these guys come from? What was the inspiration?

KL: I think they came from a deep-rooted fascination that I’ve always had with the mob.  Haha!  Seriously, I think I was the only teenager with a crush on Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.  I’ll just confess, I also had posters of Marlon Brando and Paul Newman pinned to my wall, growing up.  I was kind of an oddball.  I just sort of combined all the intriguing characters I’ve stumbled upon over the years.  Who knew they’d end up being sexy alpha, vengeance-dealing crime boss demons?

kls: Sexy. Yes. You write sexy very well, let me tell you. You held a cover model contest for Soul Resurrected and it was . . . well . . . awesome. How did you come up with the idea and how did you manage the torture of ogling all those hot bods? It must have been excruciating. I think next time you might need a personal assistant. *smiles*

KL: Haha!  Yes, um **cough** it was quite painful.  I had already planned to seek out distinct faces for each character that matched the personalities in the book.  But as a reader, I’ve had those moments when the dude on the cover just did NOT match what I’d imagined him to be.  So I thought, why not let my readers pick the guy?  That way, they not only play a part and share the experience of creating the book, but put the face THEY think looks most like Logan on his cover.  I was pleased with Julian Christian as the winner and this experience was cool enough for me to repeat without the slightest hesitation.  I LOVED seeing readers voice their thoughts about the character and who would make the best candidate—they really had a good handle on Logan!

kls: I’d certainly like to get my handles on Logan. Um, notes, where are my notes? Yes. *guzzles glass of ice water* On the topic of models and your truly awesome cover, how did you hook up with David Wagner, the man responsible for photographing Julian/Logan and designing the cover to Soul Resurrected?

KL: Well, remember that picture of Julian with that incredible intense look that I got all tingly about?  It was taken by David Wagner.  I happened to be shopping around for photographers for this contest and stalked David’s photos on Google.  I was THRILLED to find out that he was not only a photographer, but a cover designer as well.  And not just any cover designer…the guy designed a cover for my all-time favorite author, Kresley Cole. I pretty much knew I had to have David on this.  So I contacted him directly and we chatted a bit.  He is such an amazing guy! We hit it off immediately and I knew I’d feel comfortable working with him from our very first phone conversation.

kls: Let’s talk about the writing itself. You’re a wife, a mother of two, an all around nice person, and yet you write some pretty dark stuff. How do you reconcile the different bits of your persona?

KL: Haha!  Great question.  Ya know, I decided a long time ago that my writing wasn’t going to set morals for society.  It’s fiction—an opportunity for readers to slip into a world with no rules. I write the stories as they come to me and some happen to be dark and violent.  To my characters, I’m the ultimate evil mistress.  To my daughters, I’m just mom.  Sure there’s probably some crossover here and there—my daughter might be singing Elmo one minute then belting out Paramore or Florence & The Machine the next.
And my husband has always accepted that I’m a little on the strange side, so it’s all good.  I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t complain if I happened to be cooking dinner some night wearing a leather cat suit with a bullwhip attached to my hip.
At the risk of sounding a little mad, its fairly easy for me to switch between the real world and the one I created.  Just as easy for me is switching between mom, wife and writer. I think that’s the beauty of being a writer—it’s the only art in which a multiple personality disorder is socially acceptable and praised because let’s face it, the more characters you can ‘become’ the more believable the story.  As long as I’m keeping it all separated and not slaying wolves in real life, all these different parts make for a pretty exciting existence.

kls: Those are some of the best reasons to be a writer. *laughs* Well, that and the chocolate. Given your answer above, how much of that persona is in your writing?

KL: I think a bit of it shines through in some of my characters, for example, Annabelle.   There’s always one character that represents the ‘voice of reason’ in my stories.  That’s probably a crossover of my real life – the mom figure who just wants everyone to be happy and okay in the end.

kls: Aww. See, I told you guys she was nice. That is so sweet. But some of what you explore is far from sweet. You touch on some pretty deep, emotional scars in some of your characters, and delve into the darkness. How does immersing yourself in your writing affect you? Do you ever feel an emotional drain when you get into the heavier bits of your stories? How do you deal with that?

KL: Wait … is that why I’m exhausted all the time??
A little bit.  For Soul Avenged, I had a very cold and emotionally numb character in Ayden.  I don’t think I could cuff an innocent guy to the bed and threaten to kill him at every turn.  But if I’d suffered the same traumatic past as Ayden?  Unfortunately, that’s the question a writer keeps in the back of his or her head while crafting the scene.  What would I do? And Logan has a very disturbing childhood that, at times, was very hard to write.  Again, ‘living’ in that state of what if that had happened to me? makes for some very sad and somber moments while writing, but it’s the only way to truly capture that anger and shame.  It is somewhat draining and admittedly, those scenes take a bit more to get into for me.  I tend to write my darker stuff when I’m not immersed in the real world yet—like 3:30-4:00 in the morning when I can fall into this character without distraction.

kls: There are seven brothers, yes? Yum. I mean, next question . . . do you ever worry about falling into a formula as you look at the prospect of telling all their stories? Do you have an idea of what each story is going to be?

KL: That’s the beauty of my chaotic style of writing.  I don’t have a formula.  I sit down and what pours out of my skull is what ends up on the page.  There is no organized outline or plan of attack.  It’s kind of all over the place and at the end, I just hope it all makes sense and flows.  I can honestly say, if it feels formulaic while reading, I’m truly impressed with myself because I sure as hell didn’t have it all together when I wrote it!  Truly, the side stories that end up falling into place by the end, setting up each new book, are absolute unknowns for me when I first sit down to write it.  Always a surprise!

kls: And so far, great surprises at that. Okay, let’s lighten things up a bit. Even though you seem to have a very clear division between author and everything else, there have to be times the muse just takes over and you find scenes invading your brain when you really should be concentrating on something else. What’s one of the funniest, weirdest, or most inappropriate times this happened?

KL: Yes, the muse likes to catch me off guard at times.  I think the most inappropriate moment was during a meeting with a few department directors, the chief medical officer and the section chief of infectious disease – a very serious group.  As they meandered down a variety of topics, getting a little off-track, during the two-hour meeting, my mind began to wander, until I’d become so engrossed in story inside my head, I failed to recognize they’d called on me to answer a question.  After an exceptionally long pause accompanied by a stupified look on my face while my mind scrambled to remember the last two minutes of conversation, sweaty palms and a few clearings of the throat, asking to have the question repeated, I managed to pull out an answer.  It was then that I decided to keep the muse chained and locked up during meetings.

kls: Oh, I bet they were sitting around the Muse Bar having a good laugh at that one! Last question. You’ve already started writing Gavin’s story, who’s after that?

KL: Hehe … well, see that’s kind of what I hope folks will be asking after reading Soul Enslaved.

kls: Well, alrighty then. Thanks so much for stopping by Keri. For everyone else, keep reading.

And now, about more about Keri Lake and where you can find her.

Keri Lake is a married mother of two living in Michigan.  She writes paranormal romance, urban fantasy and loves a good, tragic love story.  Though novels tend to be her focus, she also writes short stories and flash fiction whenever distraction manages to suck her in to the Land of Shiny Things.

When she isn’t toiling away on plots and protagonists, she enjoys reading, music and travel.  If she could create mystical powers for herself, she’d have the ability to flash to anywhere in the world.  And if she could flash to anywhere in the world at this very moment, she’d be staring at the ocean from her adirondack chair on the shores of North Carolina.
