Who Doesn’t Like Camels?

Here it is, Wednesday again, my favorite day of the week because I get to flit around reading all the WIPpeteer offerings. Not only that, Wednesday is hump day and I like camels.

Okay, maybe I don't love camels quite as much as this guy.

Okay, maybe I don’t like camels quite as much as this guy.

Well, actually, I guess that about sums up all the reasons I like Wednesday.

I’m going to jump right into my WIPpet for this week. It’s the 7th of January so I’m going to give you 7 paragraphs from The Adorned. I haven’t spent much writing time with Roe and Fader of late, time and energy being diverted elsewhere. Elsewhere being — in part — EoD which…well…I realized the climax wasn’t working because of an event that happened only…oh… 80 pages or so into the tale. That meant going back to change that scene, which in turn meant changing many, many, many scenes between then and The End (which no, I haven’t actually reached). Ultimately, it will make for a better story and that’s all that counts. Right?

Also, I’ve been distracted by some artwork I’m creating for The Adorned. Did I ever mention I have a degree in fine art, and spent a long time as a freelance artist, as well as doing a stint at an ad agency as the lead designer? I’ve been drawing and painting probably longer than I’ve been writing. Anywho…distracted. Yeah. Which may actually turn out to be something fun for readers. I’m thinking I may just include illustrations with Roe and Fader’s story because I’ve become somewhat obsessed with them. I have no idea why. Experience has taught me, however, it’s best not to question that particular muse when she creeps out from under her rock.

But I digress. (See, easily distracted.) Back to my WIPpet. Seven for the seventh…

A finger across her lips silenced her. Fader’s body had gone rigid, his head tipped like a dog listening for a sound, his eyes unfocused.

“I know that look,” Roe said around his finger, keeping her voice low. “Damn you. Damn you, damn you, damn you. I won’t go through this again. I won’t. I hate you. I hate that you sucked me into this game of yours. I hate that you made me–“

“Leave,” he said, still not looking at her.

“Bet I will.”

“The window.”

But neither of them moved. Not until Fader sucked in a pained gasp and dropped heavily to one knee, head bowed, his shoulders heaving in irregular surges.

“Fader,” Jimmalynn’s voice sing-songed through the halls. “I expected more from you, Adorned Price. You’ve never disappointed before so my guess is the urchin clouds your vision.”

Hopefully I’ll have enough to keep sharing until I can put The Adorned on the front burner.

    • Bwahahahaha…erm…more? Shhheeeeeure. Maybe. Later.

Okay, so it’s like this, Fader and Roe–

  2. Interesting…the piece of plot we’ve been missing. At least I hope it’s a piece of that! =P

    January 7, 2015 at 6:47 am

    • Oh yes, it’s a piece all right!

  3. Wow! What on earth is going to happen?????? More Fader and Roe!

It’s great that you can do your own artwork!!

    January 7, 2015 at 10:19 am

    • I agree! More Fader and Roe!!!

*looks around* Oh…that would be my responsibility, right? Dang.

      January 7, 2015 at 12:29 pm

    • Oh, and sometimes the fact I can do my own artwork is awesome. Most times its another thing crowding onto my plate. Double-edged sword there.

  4. Great excerpt Kathi. Loved the last paragraph, so full of menace. And I’m intrigued by it, especially as I haven’t been taking part in WW for a while!

Love the interaction between Roe and Fader though. Good stuff!
    And Happy New Year! 😀

    • Thanks! Yes, Jimmalynn can be very menacing. At least, she tries. For the most part she’s quite successful at it.

  5. (Um, is Fader the Adorned Price or Adorned Prince? Sorry. A bit behind.)

I like Roe and Fader. 🙂 I’m glad you brought them out for us. I love that Roe is all “You stink. I’m leaving. Goodbye.” And yet not going anywhere. 😛 That’s such a girl thing. In such a rough n’ tough, it’s both hilarious and moving.

    • Price. It’s his last name. Though I’m thinking I may not have mentioned that anywhere. *scratches head* He’s no prince. Well, he can be a prince, but just in general. 😉 Not the royal kind.

I’m glad you like these two. 😀

Oh, gosh! That singsong voice thing…that was chilling. Reminds me of when the serial killer is after the helpless person trapped in the house with no power.

Roe *says* she hates him, but I don’t think she does. 😉

    • I’m glad it came off like that! That’s exactly what I was going for. 😀

  7. What happened? The scene ended before the good parts, aww man. Very interesting, though and love the build up. You can design your own work, so cool, I’ve been dabbling myself. But no fancy degree for me. 🙂

    January 7, 2015 at 1:38 pm

    • Thanks. 🙂 Yeah, but I’m definitely my own worse critic. And with only so many hours in the day, I don’t get to devote enough time to design/art.

      • I would love to see a few. Do you have some on your blog?

        January 8, 2015 at 10:06 pm

  8. Great excerpt, like usual, m’dear. 🙂 You certainly left us hanging there (in a good way).

    Looking forward to more!

I really like this. I like the curt dialogue especially. Happy New Year!

    January 7, 2015 at 7:43 pm

    • Happy New Year to you and yours as well. 🙂 It’s going to be an awesome one, isn’t it?

      January 8, 2015 at 6:06 am

  10. Intriguing snippet for sure. I want more.
Have just discovered wippetWed – is it for any genre or just scifi/fantasy. I tend to more romance.

    January 7, 2015 at 7:56 pm

    • Hi Bev! WIPpet Wednesday does not discriminate on genre. We take them all. We have a wide sampling from historical fiction to romance, fantasy, UF, everything in between. 🙂

  11. Aaaaaaaahhhh!!!! That was just plain mean, leaving us hanging like that (who am I kidding? I’m guilty of doing the same from time to time!) I can’t wait to read more next week. I’d also love to see what type of illustrations or other artwork you’re doing – I used to paint and draw a lot when I was younger. I need to get back into it.

    January 9, 2015 at 10:36 am

  12. Noo, damn you! Looks like at this point Roe is involved again whether she likes it or not. (I’m not sure she really objects as much as she wants Fader to think, though…)

    • Yeppers. Hee, hee.
